When is an "upgrade" not an upgrade?

Hi Broadband people

I have a question. I've been a Vodacom contract customer for 10-plus years. My monthly account from calls and data on TWO phones has never exceeded ZAR 1000. I recently upgraded from a Blackberry to a Samsung S4 and was excited to receive 2GB of mobile data per month. Bearing in mind constant smartphone data usage, I deactivated my mobile data entirely and only browse, download and update via my home WiFi.

After upgrading the contract, I started using my new droid smartphone in the middle of the month, when the new Sim was activated by Vodacom. As one does.

So I was hella shocked at receiving a month-end bill way in excess of ZAR 2000. When I queried this, Vodacom say that my new contract only kicked in at the beginning of the next calendar month. And all calls and data up to that point were billed at extreme pro-rata or "out-of-contract" rates.

This seems crazy! Nobody ever explained any of this in the VodaShop when I signed my new contract and my new Sim card was activated within 24 hours.

How does a "reasonable man" expect to move from one contract to another seamlessly as Vodacom pretends to facilitate - and then get hit by this stupid changeover period WITHOUT being informed of consumer rights to all information.

Am I the only Vodacom user who find this odd and indeed very poor CRM practice and customer service?

Thanks
