Vodacom porting screw-up, sim swap fraud or incompetence?

So I am on Cell C, and I am trying to port to Vodacom

I bought a Voda sim today, without putting it in my phone I sms'd "PORTME <SIMSERIAL>" to 082 767 8287 and got no response, tried again a few times eventually I got an sms saying "Sorry, we are currently experience problems with your Port request. Please contact customer care on 082129 or visit your nearest Vodacom outlet"

Right, so I call customer care, they give me the number of the porting dept. I call the porting dept, the guy does some tests and asks me if my name is Michael Brian with ID # starting 73.. now my name is Michael and that's about all else that is correct.

So, he says someone requested to port my number by that name about 2 minutes before I called the porting department and it must have been done in error. He said he would need to sort this out first and then he'd call me back - this is 4PM.

5:07PM I get an SMS (from the same number that told me to call customer care initially - so it's legit) saying "Welcome to your new Smart S Contract... your number is <my number>.... Your account will be debited in 48h..".

So of course some concern now, I call porting back - sorry they are closed call back tomorrow at 9AM. I call customer care, they say they can't see anything I must call Cell C. I call Cell C, they say they can't see any port requests I should call Vodacom.

Awesome. So i decide to do a live chat to Vodacom Accounts support - Denise the chat agent is so confused that she can't actually comprehend that I am trying to port, but before I could _someone else_ did it already, someone who isn't me. She eventually told me:

00:19:42 Denise : You will have to contact cell C your service provide regarding this
00:22:29 Denise : When you port to us , They will then send a port request to Cell C and also assist you to sign up for a new Vodacom contract.

So NFI what she is trying to say here.

Now I must wait until tomorrow morning to see if my Cell C number get's ported over to Vodacom because nobody could give two ****s - even though Vodacom's system sent me an sms welcoming me to my new contract.
