Captive.apple.com What is this?

My data on mtn ran out... On screen message kept asking me to sign in or can't sign in taking me to http//:captive.apple.com/generate_2 (and so forth)

Then to an mtn page saying no data etc.. My WiFi wasnt active at the time. Is there anything untoward?

I have a Sony phone on mtn contract.
